Thermal paste is the most commonly used method of heat transfer between CPUs and heat sinks. While the contact surface of the cooler and the CPU appear absolutely smooth, the surface is actually covered with microscopic ridges that reduce cooling capability. Thermal paste fills these ridges and optimizes the cooling.
